Emerita Answer

Can progesterone get rid of my migraine headaches?

Progesterone may help decrease the numbers or severity of migraines by balancing estrogen levels (reducing relative estrogen dominance) and by countering the effect of estrogen on blood vessels. Progesterone may also help to counteract the water retention and hypoglycemia often seen with estrogen dominance that are associated with an increased incidence of migraines. However, synthetic progestins, such as medroxyprogesterone or oral contraceptives, may actually increase the incidence of migraines.
